This is the cognitive and behavioral efforts to understand, minimize or endure the inner and the outer demands that develop as a result of the stressful operation (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Lazarus and Folkman stated that coping serves two main functions; the regulation of sentiments and distresses that lead to stressful situations and the management of an issue that causes stress by directly altering the factors of a stressful situation.

The Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman Model For Stress Developed in 1984, Lazarus stress is defined as an “imbalance between demands and resources.” What the two researchers meant by this was that every person has resources and skills available to them. When talking about stress, these skills are known as coping mechanisms. Lazarus and Folkman defined two major coping categories: 1 is the emotion-focused coping, refers to the regulation of emotions that are cause by the assessment process of others such as anger or sadness of losing someone, anxiety and fear when feeling threaten and eagerness and excitement, mixed with some worry when feeling challenges. 2 is the problem-focused coping, refers to the management of the problem itself.

[5] [6] In this book, they were the first to make the distinction between "problem-focused coping" and "emotion-focused coping" which could result in consequences for both physical and mental health.

(Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Lazarus and Folkman (1984) suggest that coping will be most effective if there is a match between the changeability of the stressor currently confronting the individual and the appropriate form of coping applied to the stressor. Problem-focused coping applied to changeable stressors and emotion-focused coping

Lazarus and Folkman stated that coping serves two main functions; the regulation of sentiments and distresses that lead to stressful situations and the management of an issue that causes stress by directly altering the factors of a stressful situation. Lazarus and Folkman suggest these sort of strategies include disclaiming (denial), escape-avoidance, accepting responsibility or blame, exercising self control (of thoughts and behaviours related to the situation) and engaging in positive reappraisals (finding a positive spin on the situation). Lazarus and Folkman (1984) regarded this tendency (which they termed positive reappraisal) as a type of emotion- focused coping: coping aimed at managing distress emotions rather than at dealing with the stressor per se.

(Folkman & Lazarus, 1988). Basically, two types of coping are problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. The former is related with ‘dealing with the problem causing distress’ and the latter is related with ‘regulating emotion’ (Folkman, Lazarus, Gruen, & DeLongis, 1986, p. 572). The reissue of a classic work, now with a foreword by Daniel Goleman! Here is a monumental work that continues in the tradition pioneered by co-author Richard Lazarus in his classic book Psychological Stress and the Coping Process. Dr. Lazarus and his collaborator, Dr. Susan Folkman, present here a detailed theory of psychological stress, building on the concepts of cognitive appraisal and coping which have become major themes of theory and investigation. In his 1966 book, Psychological Stress and the Coping Process (Lazarus, 1966), Richard Lazarus defined stress as a relationship between the person and the environment that is appraised as personally significant and as taxing or exceeding resources for coping. This definition is the foundation of stress and coping theory (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Lazarus and Folkman (1984), one of the pioneers of the coping theory, defined coping as: constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific external and internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the resources of the person.

The Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ) is a widely used measure of coping processes. Despite to the real stressors measured in the Folkman and Lazarus.

They explained the coping mechanism by the stress cycle where an individual’s perception of the stressful situation decides how he would cope with it (Anshel, 1996; Anshel & Weinberg, 1999; Roth & Cohen, 1986). Lazarus and Folkman (1984) suggested there are two types of coping responses emotion focused and problem focused: Emotion-focused Coping . Emotion-focused Coping .
